Welcome to another another article in the series “Keys to Surfing Fitness and Strength” where we will go through specific exercises that you might want to try, to improve your strength and fitness for surfing.
Your leg muscles are very important and many surfers focus on their arms and abs only – don’t make the same mistake! Make sure your legs are ready to absorb all shocks of waves and your surfboard. Their strength is essential if you want to keep your balance on board. We recommend you do your squats at the beginning of each workout not at the end – it is your body’s biggest muscles you need to work first.
Fitness/Swiss Ball Body Weight Wall Squat
This is an excellent surfing specific lower body exercise. Hold a Swiss Ball behind you and stand so that the ball is pinned between your lower back and the wall. Place your feet about 2 feet in front of your body. Keeping your back in contact with the ball throughout the movement – lower your body until your upper thighs are parallel to the floor.
